The position

The Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Clinical Medicine, has a position as Research Fellow available for applicants who wish to obtain the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD). The position is attached to Genomic Support Centre Tromsø (GSCT) and the research group for Gastroenterology and nutrition

The appointment is for a period of four years.

The PhD position is for a fixed term, with the objective of completion of research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD Candidate shall participate in the faculty's organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment. The project

The project is a part of the "Advanced Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (ASIB)" initiative aiming to map the immunopathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and find biomarkers for treatment stratification. It includes a multidisciplinary project group at UiT, NTNU, and the University of Umeå and is a collaboration between clinicians and basic researchers. 

The PhD. project Biomarkers predicting clinical outcome and reclassification of inflammatory bowel disease focuses on gene expression data (from colonic biopsies) at disease onset and using this data to predict the course of the disease. The project will include a strong element of bioinformatics.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must fulfill the requirements for admission to the faculty's PhD program, cf. Regulation for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) at the University of Tromsø. In addition, she/he needs to document proficiency in English equivalent to the Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification - refer to the website about on the website with the Regulations for the PhD programme at the Faculty of health Sciences.

The successful applicant must have a Master's Degree in molecular biology or a numerate discipline (e.g. bioinformatics, computer science, engineering or mathematics) and display a strong interest in applying computational methods to biological and medical research. Candidates should preferably have experience in analyzing large datasets either with machine learning, statistical methods or in a Big Data or Deep Learning context. Experience with analyzing data from genomics or transcriptomics and a basic knowledge in molecular biology will be an advantage but is not essential.

Applicants must have good English, both spoken and written form.

The candidate must be able to function in an interdisciplinary research team with coworkers from diverse training backgrounds. Emphasis will be placed on the communication and collaboration skills and the motivation and interest the candidate displays for the project.

Candidates at the final stages of Master Degree are also qualified to apply but must provide documentation of graduating before hiring.

Working and payment conditions

The normal period of employment is four years. The PhD studies normally equate to three years. The fourth year, apportioned as 25% of each year, shall be used for teaching or other duties for the university.

Shorter periods of employment may be decided if the Research Fellow has already completed parts of the research training programme, or in the event that the employment builds upon a previous appointment in an educational position (Research Fellow, Research Assistant or similar), so that the total time of research training comes to three years.

The successful candidate is obliged to make a contribution to the teaching of all students at the Faculty of Health Sciences as and where necessary.

The remuneration for Research Fellows is in accordance with the State salary scale codes 1017 and 1378, depending on the qualifications of the former.

A compulsory contribution of 2% to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted
