Position as Postdoctoral Fellow or alternatively PhD Candidate

At the Faculty of Law, University of Bergen, there is a vacant position as a Postdoctoral Fellow associated with the research project «Mare Nullius? Sea level Rise and Maritime Sovereignties in the Pacific - An Expanded Anthropology of Climate Change». The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway as a "Top research project" under the FRIPRO Top research programme and is a cooperation between the Department of Social Anthropology (lead institute), Geophysical Institute and the Faculty of law.

In case there are no qualified applicants for the Postdoctoral Fellow position, a PhD position is available. There might also be a possibility for funding of a PhD position in addition to the postdoctoral fellowship.

The positions are fixed term contracts. The term of employment for a Postdoctoral Fellow position or a PhD position is 3 years, or 4 years if the applicant is qualified to teach in compulsory courses at the Masters level at the Faculty of Law. Starting date is 25th of April 2019 or later upon agreement. Residence in the Bergen area for the duration of the position is compulsory and non-negotiable.

About the project/work tasks

• The leader of the project is Professor Edvard Hviding (Anthropology) as principal investigator (PI). The UiB core Mare Nullius team also includes Professor Ernst Nordtveit (Law) and Professor Noel Keenlyside (Climate Science), as well as two other Postdoctoral Fellows in the anthropology of diplomacy and in Pacific oceanography. In addition, the total expertise of the Bergen Pacific Studies research group (three professors [the PI, Annelin Eriksen and Knut Rio] and presently five PhD candidates, and representing experience from most of the Pacific) is integral to the project's collaborative dynamics at UiB.
• The project is in international law, but in an intersection point between legal studies, anthropology, social science and climate science. It seeks to provide information on the interaction between climate change, climate politics and law.
• It is expected that the position holder will engage in analyses of the consequences on the EEZs from physical changes caused by climate change, such as rising sea-level and land loss, based on scenarios and models of Pacific sea level rise and land loss, provided by the research team.
• The position holder is expected to work closely with the oceanography Postdoctoral Fellow in order to fine-tune predictive models to questions of territorial sovereignty, which in turn will contribute to models for maritime sovereignty loss. Academic staff at the university's Faculty of Law with interests in maritime, environmental and refugee law will be involved as dialogue partners.
• Candidates are expected to propose research questions within the project.
• The project will require travelling and research stays abroad. The project will offer great opportunities for participation in stimulating conferences and seminars and contact with high level academic environments nationally and abroad.

Qualifications and personal qualities

• Applicants for the Postdoctoral position must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree abroad within law, or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
• Applicants for the PhD position must hold a Norwegian Master in law or an equivalent degree abroad within law.
• Applicants must work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
• Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

About the position as Postdoctoral Fellow

The position as Postdoctoral Fellow is a fixed-term contract with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed-term period for this position is four years. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the same institution.

Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a work schedule. The project proposal shall be part of (attachment to) the employment contract. 

For Postdoctoral Fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work will take place in consultation with the principal investigator (project manager). It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

About the position as PhD Candidate

The teaching at the Masters program in Law is conducted mainly in Norwegian, and any teaching is to be implemented within the mandatory courses at the Faculty.

Applicants must present a project abstractJV_description (approx. 10 pages) and a project plan outline. The project abstractJV_description must follow the requirements contained in the guidelines for applicants for PhD positions.

About the PhD education                                                       Applicants must meet the formal admission requirements for the PhD program at the Faculty of Law. It is mandatory to fill out the application form for admission to doctoral education and attach it to the application.

Your application must include

• A brief account of the applicant's research interests and motivation for applying for the position.
• Project proposal for the planned research (2 - 5 pages for Postdoctoral Fellow, approx. 10 pages for PhD Candidate). This proposal shall include a plan for the dissemination of the research. The project proposal will be included as part of the contract.
• The names and contact information for two reference persons. One of these must be the main supervisor of the PhD thesis.
• CV
• Certified copies of diplomas and transcripts of grades and official confirmation that the doctoral thesis has been submitted. Applicants whose education is from another country than Norway, need to also attach a certified translation of the diploma and transcript of grades to English or a Scandinavian language, if the original is not in any of these languages. They are also advised to attach an explanation of their university's grading system.
• A complete list of scientific publications.
• Academic works that the applicant wishes to be considered by the valuation committee. If the submitted publications are co-authored, the division of work between the authors must be confirmed in the form of a co-author statement. The submitted publications must be in English or in a Scandinavian language unless otherwise specifically agreed upon.
