About the position

The Faculty of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science (KBM) at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 3-year PhD-position within environmental microbiology.

The successful candidate will be anchored in the NMBU Nitrogen group, which consists of members from the research group Microbial Ecology and Physiology at KBM and partners at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA).

The PhD candidate will be involved in research on the growth of N2O-reducing bacteria in digestates from anaerobic digestion, and their effects on the N2O emission from soils fertilized with such digestates.

This research is at the core of NMBU Nitrogen Group, and draws heavily on the group's unique infrastructure and ongoing research on the regulatory biology of denitrification.

The digestate-project involves close collaboration with waste- and biogas industries in Norway and abroad. More information about the project is found on our group webpage. The project is funded by NMBU.

Main tasks

• Enrichment culturing of N2O reducing bacteria in various digestates and soils, with the aim of isolating organisms that are able to grow in both environments
• Testing their effects on denitrification kinetics in soils in general, and N2O emission in particular
• In collaboration with the project group, identifying the organisms by metagenomics and metaproteomics
• Isolating the organisms, aided by metagenomics, and characterizing their regulatory phenotypes

Qualifications and skills

The successful applicant must meet the conditions defined for admission to a PhD programme at NMBU. The applicant must have an academically relevant education corresponding to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are at master's degree level. The applicant must have a documented strong academic background from previous studies, and be able to document proficiency in both written and oral English. Required academic qualifications

• The successful applicant must hold a master's degree within environmental technology, preferentially related to soil biology
• Understanding and experience with research on microbial nitrogen redox transformations in general, and denitrification in particular.

Desired academic qualifications

• Good understanding of  microbial gas kinetics in general, and methods to monitor/analyze such kinetics
• Experience with laboratory work with soils in general, and their gas kinetics in particular.
• Gas chromatographic and chemiluminescence techniques to detect the product stoichiometry of denitrification (N2, N2O and NO)
• Experience with analyses of digestates from anaerobic digestion.

Remuneration and information

The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1017 (PhD Fellow), wage framework 20 (salary grade 51-62). PhD Fellows are normally assigned pay grade 51 (NOK 449 400) on the Norwegian Government salary scale upon employment and follow ordinary meriting regulations.

Faculty of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science (KBM)

KBM is located at Ås Campus, 30 km south of Oslo, and has approximately 130 employees spread over 11 research groups, with focus on microbiology, microbial ecology, food science, fundamental and applied enzymology, enzyme discovery, and bioprocessing technology. The current project entails research collaboration with other groups at KBM, as well as two international partners.

The NMBU Nitrogen group is a mid-sized (20-25 people), dynamic research group spanning two NMBU faculties. We have ongoing collaborations with several strong research groups at universities across the world (Europe, USA, China, New Zealand) and with national and international industries. Our core interest is the nitrogen cycle with particular emphasis on the microbial processes driving the emission of the climate gas N2O. Our research spans studies of pure cultures, complex systems and field trials and our approach combines molecular techniques, robotics/gas measurements and mathematical modelling.
