A doctoral fellowship is currently available at the Department of Computer Science at the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design at OsloMet. The PhD Fellowship is part of the RELINK project - Relinking the weak link". Building resilient digital households through interdisciplinary and multilevel exploration and intervention" funded by the IKTPluss programme at the Norwegian Research Council and led by Consumption Research Norway (SIFO).

RELINK aims to develop knowledge, tools and frameworks for addressing the risks and vulnerabilities related to the use of Internet of Things (IoT), technologies and digital services accessed from the home. The project will a) study technologies, infrastructures and practices in a variety of connected households, b) map risks and vulnerabilities related to social and technological infrastructures and networks c) develop a set of tools for managing risks and vulnerabilities by households and d) generate scenarios for the future connected home.

The appointment is for a term of 4 years with 25% duties primarily associated with education tasks (teaching, lab, supervision, etc.).

Area of research

The research group Universal Design of Information and Communication Technology (UD-ICT) group is at the forefront of research in the universal design of ICT systems. The group addresses interdisciplinary challenges including both social and technological aspects of designing, developing and evaluating ICT systems for all and for specific user groups.

The project proposal should focus on developing digital tools and materials for everyday risk management involving collaboration among researchers, household members, designers and security experts. These tools may include models and guidelines for households to ensure effective everyday risk management and user awareness of information privacy and security in smart-home environments. The tools should focus more on the processes around the creation and use of smart-home technologies, than on the technological products themselves. As such, tools may also include pedagogical practices for raising awareness and training households in securing personal data and promoting data privacy in the use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and in relation to data collection and surveillance by commercial, non-commercial and governmental entities.

Required qualifications and skills

- Master's degree or equivalent in Social Science, Psychology, Computer Science, Information Science, Science and Technology Studies, or field related to the themes of the RELINK project.
- Experience with user-centered/human-centered design approaches for ICT products and services.
- Experience in interdisciplinary research projects.
- Final project plan for the fellowship period is required completed and acknowledged within 3 months after commencement.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, plan, dimension and direct own work.

Desired skills and experience

- Ability and willingness to exploit possibilities for innovation.
- Experience working with socially disadvantaged communities, in particular persons with disabilities.
- Experience with publishing research results, preferably in international peer-reviewed conferences/ journals.
- Academic or practical experience related to the themes of the RELINK project.
- Knowledge of Norwegian language.
- A keen interest in teaching and supervising students.

The fellowship requires admission to a PhD programme approved by the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Technology, Art and Design. Successful enrolment into this PhD program is required before entering the PhD position.

Remuneration

Salary is set in accordance with the Norwegian State Salary Scale, job code 1017 NOK 449 400. By law 2% of the salary is deducted as to the Norwegian State Pension Fund.



The appointment of the PhD will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees.
