The position

The Department of Pharmacy seeks a motivated and enthusiastic PhD candidate to join the Pharmacology Research group.  As a successful applicant, your project will focus on developing methods for efficient genome editing in Atlantic Salmon, and the use of this technique to answer important biological questions related to fish health. As a member of the research group you will work with a small ambitious team with long experience in molecular biology and the use of CRISPR-cas9 mediated editing in mammalian system and in close collaboration with the Fish Immunology and Vaccinology Research Group at Norwegian College of Fishery Science as well as the  Research Group in Macromolecular Chemistry at Department of Chemistry.

The appointment is for a period of 4 years. The nominal length of the PhD program is three years. The fourth year is distributed as 25 % of each year, and will consist of teaching or other duties for the department.

Field of research

The present appointment is one of three PhD stipends awarded to the interdisciplinary project FISH & CRISPR -Innovative strategies to improve salmon health. As such, you will collaborate closely with molecular and immunology groups from two other faculties, the Faculty of Bioscience, Fisheries and Economics and the Faculty of Science and Technology where the Department of Chemistry is located.

The focus for the project will be to develop and optimize protocols for efficient gene-editing in Atlantic salmon including protocols for precise gene editing involving homology derived repair.  These protocols will be used to generate knock-out and knock-in salmonid cell lines and in whole salmon targeting genes important for immunological function and viral infections. The overall goal for the project is to provide novel biological knowledge into the mechanisms of immunological defence in salmon, which will improve fish health and contribute to a more sustainable aquaculture industry.

Required qualifications

In order to be appointed to the role of Research Fellow, the eligibility requirements for the faculty's PhD programme must be met, cf. section 6, Regulations for the Degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) at the University of Tromsø, with additional provisions concerning the Faculty of Health Sciences which can be found on the website with the Regulations for the PhD programme at the Faculty of health Sciences.

You must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in Molecular Biology, cell biology or immunology (or equivalent) with an average of C or better according to the Norwegian system.

You must have good academic performance, analytical and collaboration skills, and a genuine interest for performing research. This will be demonstrated through your Master's thesis/ other academic works, and academic record.

Prior work in with molecular biology techniques such as recombinant DNA technology, mammalian or fish cell lines, genomics or bioinformatics will be regarded positively, but willingness to learn is key. Documented laboratory experience in general molecular biology/ cell biology (obtained either through academic courses, project work or employment) is essential: applicants with only computational backgrounds (bioinformatics or modelling) and no wet-lab qualifications will not be considered.

Proficiency in a Scandinavian language will be favored due to teaching obligations.

Master students in the final stages are also qualified to apply, but have to document completed degree before employment.

Working and payment conditions

The successful candidate is obliged to make a contribution to the teaching of all students at the Faculty of Health Sciences as and where necessary.

The remuneration for Research Fellows is in accordance with the State salary scale codes 1017 and 1378, depending on the qualifications of the former.

A compulsory contribution of 2% to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

  • Passed exam in Norwegian as a second language at "VKII" level (3. year)
  • Passed level 3 exam in Norwegian for international students at the universities
  • Passed exam from one year's university study in Norwegian language and society for international students
  • The Bergen Test: test in Norwegian - higher level. Written test with a minimum of 450 points or a "Pass" (in new grade scale). Those who have Swedish or Danish as a first language and who fulfil the general university and college admission requirements in their native country do not need to take the test.

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the application documents and the text of the announcement.

The Assessment Committee will give emphasis to the potential for research, as presented in the Master's thesis or equivalent, or in any other academic works.

In the assessment, consideration may also be given to professional experience and any other activity which may be significant for the completion of the doctoral degree, as well as to any pedagogical qualifications. This includes pedagogical training, teaching experience, experience of public education and experience/training of other kinds.

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview shall, among other things, aim to clarify the applicant's personal suitability for the position and motivations. A trial lecture may also be held.
