The University of Agder (UiA) invites applications for one full-time, fixed-term appointment as Researcher (SKO 1108) in the Horizon 2020 project RePAST, where the University of Agder is a partner institution, for a period of two years, (with possible contract extension). This position is located in Kristiansand, Norway. The starting date is April 1, 2019.

 

The successful candidate will work in the EU-funded Horizon 2020 project RePAST, and will be supervised by the UiA head researcher for the project at the Faculty of Humanities and Education, department of Nordic and Media Studies.

 

Brief information about the Horizon2020 project RePAST:

RePAST aims at investigating how European societies presently deal with their troubled pasts through the analysis of conflict discourses rooted in those pasts, with a view of the impact of those discourses on European integration. It will implement actions and propose strategies, both at the levels of policy-making and in civil society, with the aim of reflecting upon these discourses to strengthen European integration. The project directly addresses the specific challenge and scope of the topic CULTCOOP-02-2017, focusing on civil society, informal education and political discourses. The methodological approach of RePAST is based on (i) multidisciplinarity, (ii) cross-country comparative analysis and (iii) innovative actions for citizens' engagement with troubled pasts. First, conflict discourses rooted in troubled pasts will be studied in four fundamental spaces of civil society and sources of informal education: (a) history (oral and official), (b) media (journalistic and citizen-led media), (c) art and culture, (d) politics (formal and informal politics). It will also take into account how the current crisis in its multiple forms (economic crisis, refugee crisis, political crisis) mediates these narratives. RePAST brings the various disciplines into dialogue with each other on the ground of an empirical study across the geographical and historical spectrum. Second, RePAST will comparatively study eight cases of countries whose troubled pasts sit squarely on legacies that still endanger European integration today: Cyprus, Germany, Poland, Greece, Bosnia, Kosovo, Ireland, and Spain. Lastly, RePAST will emphasise the active engagement of memory agents through a series of innovative actions for creating participatory experiences, i.e. interactive storytelling, research tools for analysis on memory and conflict, workshops for cultural tourism professionals, a treasure-hunt game to discover troubled pasts, and digital games for renegotiating troubled pasts.

University of Agder's roles and tasks in RePAST:

The University of Agder is one of 12 partners in RePAST, and the university's activities in the project are located at the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Department of Nordic and Media Studies. UiA is one of the leading partner institutions of Work Package 3 in RePAST (Journalistic Media) and is also responsible for the implementation of all of RePAST's work packages in Kosovo. Work Package 3 will analyse journalistic and citizen-led media in tandem and will identify significant convergences and divergences between various discourses of the past that are mobilised across the media. It will advance knowledge on the role of media in producing contemporary discourses about troubled pasts and the implications for European integration across variables of national identity, age, gender, and class. The University of Agder has a special responsibility for the journalistic media part of WP3.

 

Working tasks for the successful candidate:

• The researcher will develop research design, methodology, and will implement research on journalistic media in the RePAST project, as described in the project document.
• The researcher will write reports, academic articles and book chapters based on the research in RePAST, in accordance with the project document.
• The researcher will be advising the RePAST team on Kosovo, including oral and official history, journalism and citizen-led media, arts and culture, and political discourse, attitudes and policies, as well as other relevant issues for the project in Kosovo.
• The researcher will implement RePAST's research in Kosovo. This includes the four main work packages (oral and official history, journalism and citizen-led media, arts and culture, and political discourse, attitudes and policies)
• The researcher will develop communication and dialogue between RePAST and relevant actors in Kosovo, including academia, policy makers, media, the culture sector and other stakeholders.

Requirements

To be regarded as an eligible applicant, the candidates must have:

• A master's degree in journalism, communication, media studies or similar fields
• Extended academic knowledge in the field of international politics, including diplomacy, European relations and the Balkans
• Research experience from international projects in the fields of journalism, news, media development and politics
• A record of international academic publications in the fields of journalism, media and the Balkans
• Expert knowledge about Kosovo and the Balkans, including history, culture, politics, language and societal development
• Working experience from national and international organisations in Kosovo is desired.

Language requirements
Due to UiA's responsibilities for RePAST's implementation in Kosovo, the researcher must speak and write English and Albanian. Knowledge of Serbian is desired.

 

In addition, the candidate should have:

• Scientific ambitions

• Good analytical and problem-solving skills
• Capacity for goal-oriented work and ability to concentrate
• Good communication and team-working skills, inventiveness and a proactive attitude
• Strong academic credentials, written and spoken English proficiency

Remuneration

The position is remunerated according to the State Salary Scale, salary plan 90.400 code 1108 Researcher, lr. 25, gross salary per year NOK 576 100 - 597 400,- .  A 2% compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
