About the position

The Institute of Design at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) calls for applications for a full-time, permanent position as Professor/Associate Professor in Service Design.

The Institute of Design wishes to strengthen its professional staff through this new position by building and further developing the field of Service Design. This is a prioritized and strategic subject area for the Institute, and the person who secures the position will play an important strategic role.

It is expected that the applicant will have a role in developing the service design field in accordance with national competence needs. The applicant must therefore be able to articulate the practice of Service Design at a high level and to develop and implement new visions for Service Design nationally and internationally. This may involve new collaboration projects with the public sector and commercial players, new research projects as well as the development of Service Design as a profession. This entails working closely with industry and the public sector to provide the highest level of professional competence through research both for our students and as a means of participating in professional development. We are therefore looking for a person who is well established in the field and who can further strengthen the discipline at AHO through research, research leadership, teaching and supervising, including management and administrative work.

AHO was one of the first design schools in the Nordic countries to develop courses and research activities in Service Design and currently has a strong position both in Norway and internationally. Central to AHO's research portfolio is cooperation with leading commercial and public service providers. This happens in part through the Centre for Service Innovation (a long-term centre initiative under the Research Council of Norway's Centres for Research-based Innovation (SFI) programme). Furthermore AHO has had a strategic focus on Design for Public Services (DOT) since 2013. In addition, as a major part of this portfolio in DOT, the Institute has established a second SFI: the Centre for Connected Care (C3).

Service Design continues to be field under rapid development, and the person who secures the position will play a central role in the field's development, particularly for the recent advances of 'experientially rich services'.

The position has the following responsibilities:

1. Research and development

The candidate will be responsible for the design of strategy and tactics for The Institute of Design's research in service design. This includes identifying research areas, applying for research grants nationally and internationally, as well as the follow-up of existing research. Initially, this applies to further development of activities on 'service design for experientially rich services'. It is also expected that the candidate her/himself will lead and conduct research activities in this area, for both public and commercial services. AHO has several PhD fellows in service design, and the position involves co-ordination of these fellows as well as the supervision of PhD fellows. The position will include collaboration with other research areas and projects at the Institute.

 2. Coordination of the service design team

This is a team-leader and coordinator role, and will be carried out in close collaboration with the head of the Institute. The position involves participation in the design of strategy and tactics for AHO's further development of service design, and internal coordination of the group's operationalization of the strategy in both research and teaching. Participation in the Institutes coordinators' group is also a part of the position. This also includes managerial and administrative work.

3. Teaching and developing the service design curriculum

AHO offers Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programme with specialization in Service Design. The position comes with the responsibility for planning and teaching a comprehensive course offering within service design in collaboration with the other teaching resources at the institute. It also includes coordination of the courses as well as carrying out the teaching on the courses at Bachelor's, Master's and PhD level. Furthermore, the position will involve planning, development and participation in the implementation of executive education. Key to AHO's research approach is achieving a synergy between research, cooperation with industry & public sector, and studio courses at the school, leading to relevant high-quality research and teaching.

Areas of responsibility

We are looking for a highly motivated teacher and researcher with leadership qualities who will be responsible for:

• teaching and its coordinating at Bachelor's, Masters and doctoral levels
• research leadership in Service Design as well as development of the field at the Institute in collaboration across other disciplines and domains
• further development of the service design area related to experience-rich services
• developing applications for funding towards new research and innovation projects
• supervision of master's and also PhD candidates and teaching and development of teaching in Service Design across BA and MA
• dissemination and positioning AHOs research and teaching activities nationally and internationally to a broad specter of stakeholders: from experts to the general public.

Qualification requirements

The applicant must have the following qualifications:

• be a highly skilled service designer with a master's degree or equivalent qualifications in a relevant field design (eg. Service Design, Systems Oriented Design, Interaction Design, Design Management, Visual Communication, Product Design)
• must have completed a PhD within the field of Service Design, or be in the final stages of completion and/or a body of professional research publication, practice and leadership
• experience from research, research leadership and management in service design that qualifies for the position of professor/assistant professor
• experience from developing research applications and participation in research projects in design, preferably in Service Design, and using a research by design approach.
• extensive experience from developing and performing practice/research-led design teaching at bachelor and/or master's level
• be able to teach in Norwegian and in English
• excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

The candidate's professional qualities should include:

• outstanding leadership, collaboration and communication skills
• research and practical experience from the area of service design for experience-rich services
• innovative, proactive and solution-oriented perspectives and approaches
• being able to support and sustain the building of an ambitious atmosphere that comes with periods with high work intensity
• good pedagogic skills and relevant experience.

Priority will be given to a candidate with the following qualifications:

• fluency in written and spoken Norwegian/a Scandinavian language
• excellent visualization and facilitation skills
• an understanding of private and public services in a Norwegian/Scandinavian context.

We will prioritize applicants who have visions and ambitions for the development of the field of service design at AHO. We will also prioritize candidates with research leadership and publication experience as well as teaching experience, who have documented results, and the ability to work in a team, both as the leader and as a team player. We are also interested in applicants who would be motivated to take up a designer-researcher career development path to grow expertise in this area and to extend current competence and experience further.

The position requires residency in the Oslo region.

We offer:

• a stimulating and international professional research and teaching environment
• the salary for the position will be between pay level NOK 607 700-815 400 per year, depending on the applicant's qualifications
• a pension agreement with the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, with 2% of the salary deducted for the social security fund
