About the position

The Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging (ISB), at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a full time tenure Professorship/Associate Professorship in Medicine (Exercise in Medicine).

The Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging includes the following subject areas: Exercise Physiology and Sport Sciences, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Cardiology and Pulmonary Medicine, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Biomedical Technology and Medical Imaging.

The Department is also responsible for hosting the Centre of Innovative Ultrasound Solutions (CIUS), Cardiac Exercise Research Group (CERG, ntnu.edu/cerg) and the Magnetic Resonance Research Centre. ISB collaborates with the Research and Development units at St. Olav's Hospital, including two Norwegian National Advisory Boards.

Work abstractJV_description

Subject area and responsibilities of the position

Together with the Department's other academic staff, the person holding the position is responsible for teaching, supervision of students, research, and academic development in the disciplines of Clinical Medicine and Physical Activity and Health. The position also includes administrative duties.

Specific responsibilities

The position includes responsibility for developing and strengthening CERG and ISB's research within physical activity and health. This covers translational research, including extensive clinical research, combined with innovation projects. Research will be conducted in close collaboration with other researchers, university partners, and clinical staff at St. Olav's hospital, health services and industry.

Qualification requirements

To be eligible for appointment as Professor, an academic level conforming to established national standards is required; quality and breadth of scientific work will be assessed. Applicants are required to hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field of research or be able to document competence at an equivalent level and to the same extent and quality. Applicants must have relevant professional health education (for example, medical doctor, physiotherapist, nurse) or hold a Master's degree in Sports Sciences or equivalent.

The applicant must document their experience with translational research, including extensive clinical exercise research within physical activity and health, as well as potential innovation projects. It is of highest importance that the applicant has good motivation for, and documented ability of, interdisciplinary cooperation.

The applicant is expected to apply for research funding from national and international sources, both independently and through active contribution within a team. The applicant should enclose detailed information on successful funding applications, including application reference numbers and the applicant's role in the project. It is also requested to enclose copies of applications submitted to international research funding sources.

ISB participates actively in research communication and public debates, and is a key source of information for exercise medicine in the Norwegian news. This is an important part of the social mission, and it is desirable that the applicant documents experience in research communication beyond publication in international journals.

Experience in administration and management is required. Personal suitability and motivation will also be considered.

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course in Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

The candidate must be fluent in written and oral English.

The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at the department.

Other requirements:

Basic qualifications in the discipline of education are required. Anyone who is appointed without having formal basic qualifications in the discipline of education (formerly referred to as practical qualifications in teaching at university level) and who is unable to document equivalent qualifications is required to complete an approved course within two years of appointment. Uniped at NTNU offers qualifying courses.

Pedagogical skills and qualifications will be emphasized. The evaluation will be based on documented material related to teaching, forms of presentation for the academic works, experience in teaching, supervision of doctoral and master's degree subjects as well as other types of pedagogical background. Applicants with teaching experience at university level will be preferred. Quality and breadth will be evaluated.

Employees who do not have formal qualifications in teaching at university level and who cannot provide documentation of equivalent qualifications must complete an approved pedagogical development programmewithin two years of appointment.

The person appointed must comply with the decisions about changes due to developments in the subject area, and the organizational changes that may result from decisions regarding the university's activities.

Salary and conditions

Depending on qualifications and academic background, normal wage level for Professors at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is NOK 695 500 - 900 000 of which 2 % is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

Depending on qualifications and academic background, normal wage level for Associate Professors at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is NOK 565 000 - 695 000 of which 2 % is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The person holding the position is obliged to participate in implementation of the teaching programme according to the curricula in effect, and is expected to further develop the subject areas within the teaching programmes. A particular focus of teaching will be given to the newly established international Master programme in Physical Activity and Health

The clinical programme in medicine at NTNU is based on an integrated academic model in which preclinical, paraclinical, and clinical disciplines are coordinated from the first academic year. Teaching takes place partly in small groups centered on patient abstractJV_descriptions, and partly as lectures, seminars, laboratory exercises, and practice in the skills laboratory. Much of the teaching is in the form of problem-based learning in student groups with university staff as tutors. The person holding the position is obliged to participate as a tutor in such groups.

The candidate must help to ensure that students develop a global perspective on health and knowledge about global health challenges in their own subject area, and must contribute to group work focused on global health challenges in both research and education.
