A position as postdoctoral research fellow is available at the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Oslo. The position is for two years.

A postdoctoral research fellowship (SKO 1352) in the project "Criminal justice, wildlife conservation and animal rights in the Anthropocene" (CRIMEANTHROP) is available at the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Oslo.

CRIMEANTHROP is an interdisciplinary project run by Professor Ragnhild Sollund, and a core group from the disciplines of political science, law and criminology, doing case studies in Norway, Germany, the UK and Spain. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to actively participate in this research consortium.

The project will investigate human-animal relationships with a focus on wildlife conservation. Attention will be paid to the legal and ethical foundations for, and political practices of, wildlife conservation and its converse, wildlife exploitation. The project will use and develop theoretical approaches and concepts from green criminology such as harm, speciesism, species justice and eco-justice.

The postdoctoral fellow will be placed in a work package that aims to establish the efficiency of wildlife management and protection in Norway, through exploring the implementation and enforcement of CITES and the Bern Convention, socio-legal norms, enforcement effectiveness, and ambiguities. The postdoctoral research fellow must engage in the following research: First, assess the normative foundations of the supranational framework concerning wildlife management through a critical legal discourse analysis of CITES and the Bern Convention. Second, examine the preparatory work related to the implementation of CITES and the Bern Convention, as well as the legislation in Norway. Third, interview stakeholders, such as from NGOS, and politicians. The postdoctoral research fellow will be expected to publish findings in three articles in high-impact English language journals, co-author one article with CRIMEANTHROP colleagues, contribute with a chapter to an anthology and to disseminate CRIMEANTHROP results to end users.

More about the position

The appointment is for 2 years and may, in special circumstances, be extended to 2,2 years, with teaching, supervision duties and research assistance constituting 10 % of the overall workload. A prerequisite for such an extension is that the appointee meets the current teaching needs of the Faculty of Law.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in criminology, sociology of law or law. The degree should preferably include a combination of criminology and law.

To be eligible, the applicant must have submitted his/her doctoral dissertation for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defense of the doctoral thesis being approved.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled researcher with a background that qualifies her or him for performing an empirical and theoretical investigation. Relevant expertise for the position is experience within green criminology, environmental law, and/or studies into human-animal relations. The candidate must also be skilled in qualitative methodologies, including discourse analysis, since s/he will be expected to do qualitative interviews and examine the CITES and Bern convention, legislation and legal history. The purpose of the postdoctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines, while contributing to the goals of CRIMEANTHROP.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the quality of the project abstractJV_description and how it contributes to CRIMEANTHROP's research plan, and on the demonstrated academic and personal ability on the part of the candidates to complete the project within the given time frame.

The short-listed candidates will be invited to an interview at the University of Oslo or we will arrange for an interview on Skype.

A good command of written and spoken English and Norwegian is required.
