Position as Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is available at the Department of Geosciences, in the Environmental Geology group.

No one can be appointed for more than one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Oslo.

The appointment is a fulltime position and is made for a period of up to four years (25 % of which is devoted to required duties, usually in the form of teaching activities). Starting date no later than October 1, 2019.

Project abstractJV_description

The Department of Geosciences seeks a highly motivated hydrogeologist that can enrich and strengthen the Department's focus on Environmental geology. Groundwater processes rely on representative conceptual models of the subsurface, i.e. ultimately on how heterogeneity and anisotropy is related to subsurface geology. The successful candidate should have a basic hydrogeological/geological training and experience in modelling flow in porous media as well as fractured rock aquifers. Besides flow in aquifer systems, applied aspects related to contaminant transport, engineering geology, and heat storage/recovery are relevant fields of expertise.

A combination of insight in soil and groundwater flow and transport modelling as well as experience with field investigation methods would be an advantage. We seek a candidate with a strong background in quantitative methods linking data and observations to modelling. These key qualifications should form the basis for teaching and supervision of master students at the department. The Department has access to good computer facilities and technical support.

The successful candidate shall contribute to teaching and supervision (25 % of working time). Relevant courses are GEO4190 Hydrogeology and GEO4360 Field methods in hydrogeology. More information about these courses can be found at: http://www.mn.uio.no/geo/english/

Postdoctoral fellows who are appointed for a period of four years are expected to acquire basic pedagogical competency in the course of their fellowship period within the duty component of 25 %.

The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

• Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in Hydrogeology, geology/earth sciences or related disciplines. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defense of the doctoral thesis being approved.
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English is required and competence in a Scandinavian language an asset.
• Candidates should have a noticeable track record in scientific publishing and outreach of relevance to Hydrogeology.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.
