Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in bioinformatics and machine learning

At the Department of Informatics there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within the Computational Biology Unit, a centre hosted by the department. The position is for a fixed term of 3 years and is associated with an ERA net project on personalized medicine, financed by The Research Council of Norway.

The Department of informatics has seven research groups that deliver research and education at a high international level in algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory, and visualization. All the groups are successfully co-funded by research grants, among others by the European Research Council (ERC). The department offers state of art education at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.

About the project/work tasks:

All employees are expected to contribute to excellence through high quality research and teaching. The successful candidate will conduct research within one of the research groups of our department, specifically within the bioinformatics group that is part of the Computational Biology Unit.The position is also linked with CCBIO, Centre for Cancer Biomarkers - a Centre of Excellence supported by the Research Council of Norway. This position is mainly funded by an ERA net project (AML_PM) within the ERA PerMed program. In the project, we will use a range of experimental model systems and omics including single cell technologies to characterize individual patients with acute myeloid leukemia and their early response to signaling-targeted drugs. Machine learning approaches will be applied to predict the best treatment options for new patients. The position is with the coordinator of the project and the post-doc employed will have a central role in developing and applying approaches for the processing and analysis of omics data as well as machine learning within this project. The post-doc will work closely with other groups in the project with expertise within quantitative data generation, systems biology, hematology/oncology and stem cell biology - in Norway, Germany, Netherlands and Canada.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

• Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within a relevant field, e.g. bioinformatics or informatics, or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
• A solid quantitative (mathematics) and computational (informatics/computer science) background is a requirement
• Solid theoretical knowledge and practical experience in bioinformatics is a requirement
• Experience from analysis of omics data including RNA-seq is a requirement
• Experience programming in a relevant programming language (e.g., Python, Java, R) is a requirement
• Knowledge and practical experience working with machine learning is an advantage
• Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
• Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English
• Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The postdoctoral position is a fixed term position with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. Depending on the qualifications and background of the appointee, the employment period may be increased up to 4 years. Teaching and other components will in such cases be added to the work task of the position. The department will fund the extra months. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work, as well as a progress plan, will be developed in cooperation with the supervisor and head of department. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.
