Postdoctoral Fellow 

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Biomedicine, a full-time (100%) position as Postdoctoral Fellow is available for a period of three (3) years.

The position is part of the project "Computational medical imaging and machine learning - methods, infrastructure and applications", at the newly established Mohn Medical Imaging and Visualization Center (MMIV), Department of Radiology, Haukeland University Hospital (https://mmiv.no), and is funded by the Bergen Research Foundation.

About the project/work tasks:

The goal of our research group is to develop, implement, disseminate and evaluate machine learning techniques in the analysis of medical images and image-related data. To successfully incorporate machine learning in medicine, doctors and medical specialists must to take a leading role. Our project, initiated from the Department of Biomedicine at UiB and the Department of Computing, Mathematics and Physics at HVL, is therefore tightly connected with departments at the hospital where data is collected, and decisions are made. Our research is done in close collaboration with world-class clinical researchers, ensuring the research results' relevance and increasing its potential impact. The project involves many researchers in Bergen, both clinical and methodological, in addition to national and international collaborators from world-class research institutions. The overall aim is to contribute to increased degree of personalized medicine and better decision support for diagnosis, prognosis and therapy in diseases and conditions where images are an important source of information.

• The work will be done in a highly interdisciplinary research group consisting of biomedical researchers, mathematicians, statisticians and computer scientists, in close collaboration with clinicians
• MMIV has access to state-of-the-art imaging infrastructure, e.g. the most recent models from Siemens and General Electric (GE 3TMR 750 Discovery, Siemens Prisma 3T, Siemens Skyra 3T, Siemens Biograph mMR PET/MR, Siemens Vision PET/CT)
• The postdoctoral fellow will play an active role in introducing next-generation technology (e.g. deep learning) for medical image processing and analysis-, and develop new domain-oriented machine learning techniques and methods.
• Applications that can be investigated (depending on the candidate's background and interests) include brain (e.g. neurodegeneration, tumour, stroke, MS), gastroenterology (brain-gut-microbiota), gynecologic cancer, prostate (cancer), kidney (CKD, cancer), and cardiac imaging

Qualifications and personal qualities:

We seek highly motivated individuals with experience applying machine learning to medical images.

• The candidate must hold a PhD-degree within the field of medical imaging, biomedical sciences or natural sciences, on topics related to statistics, machine learning, computational medicine, bioinformatics or similar, or have submitted their doctoral dissertation for evaluation within the closing date of the application. It is a condition for appointment that the dissertation is approved
• The candidate must have research experience from medical MR imaging
• In your application you must to point out why are especially motivated and qualified for this particular position. We are looking for candidates who have experience in both machine learning and medical image analysis
• Very good programming skills is a requirement. You are encouraged to include a link to your GitHub profile or similar documentation of programming competence in your application
• The candidate should be proficient in spoken and written English
• Personal skills will be emphasized. The candidate should be able to work independently and interactively in a team setting, be motivated and responsible, and have a great work capacity and enthusiasm for research, including writing manuscripts and preferentially also grant applications

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

In general, the purpose of postdoctoral positions at the University of Bergen is the building of competence by means of further development of research work to a higher level than what is possible within an ordinary PhD program. The main goals of the positions are to qualify the successful candidate for professional top positions.

It is a goal that the employment period is carried out as a continuous research program. Hence, leaves of absence for other purposes than those laid down by law are normally not granted.

Applicants shall, once employed, put forward a proposal for a project for qualifying work. The proposal shall include a work plan. It is a condition that the successful candidate completes the project during the employment period.

The employee may be assigned up to 25% required duties in the form og teaching and similar work at the department.

Postdoctoral fellowships are fixed term positions. You can not be employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than one fixed term period at the same institution. Also, you cannot be employed in a postdoctoral position if you have previously held this type of position at a different institution in the region.

The fixed term period for the position is three years, with the possibility for an extension of the period up to one years if a research-related stay abroad shall be included in the employment period.

• salary level 59 (code 1352/pay framework 24.3) at present NOK 515?200 gross p.a., with a degree in Medicine or Dentistry level 61 (code 1352/pay framework 24.5) at present NOK 534?100 gross p.a., with a medical specialization level 63 (code 1352/pay framework 24.7) at present NOK 555?100 gross p.a. on the government salary scale. Further promotion will be after service seniority in the position
