The appointment is a 3 year full time position (code 1017) in the Institute for Health and Society, The Faculty of Medicine. The position is connected to the research group KNOWIT at the Department of Health Sciences. The aim of KNOWIT is to explore factors that inhibit and facilitate translation processes in healthcare and develop concepts and models to evaluate and facilitate such processes

The PhD fellowship is related to an established research project which aims is to study the development and implementation of United Nation's new sustainable development agenda with 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). http://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-development-goals/ The new Agenda is unique in that it calls for action by all countries, poor, rich and middle-income to promote prosperity and end poverty. All countries share the responsibility for following-up and reviewing progress made in implementing the 17 goals. Health and well-being holds a prominent position in the 2030 Agenda as a core dimension of social sustainability.

The established research project traces the sustainable development transformation path from the creation process resulting in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to the implementation of the goals in local health care and educational settings with special emphasis on potential tensions between global and local concerns. The purpose of the PhD-fellow's research project will be to understand barriers to the realisation of gender-related health and bodily integrity rights as operationalised in the SDGs. Special emphasis has to be on development aid projects focusing on the transfer of knowledge and skills from international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) to local partners and beneficiaries.

The material for the project will consist of 1) texts from key development aid actors in the international, (Norwegian) governmental and non-governmental sectors, and 2) an ethnographic study of a representative development aid programme in order to explore learnings from phase one and explore divergences of priorities and conceptualizations between the INGO that is the "project owner" and its local implementing project partners.

The appointment is a fulltime position and is made for a period of three years. The research fellow must take part in the Faculty's approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. For information: https://www.med.uio.no/english/research/phd/index.html

Starting date has to be September 15 2019 at latest.

The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

Qualification requirements

• Applicants must hold a Master's degree (120 ECTS) or an equivalent qualification in medicine or other relevant field, minimum grade B (ECTS grading scale) or equivalent. The Master's degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English and a Scandinavian language is required
• Prior experience within the R&D fields mentioned in the job abstractJV_description is an advantage
• Preferably the candidate will have knowledge about the UN's system and international non-governmental organisations (INGOs)
• The ideal candidate is able to work effectively as part of a team

We seek candidates with a strong background in at least one of the following; global health, global governance, gender studies, studies of human rights, text analysis, discourse analysis, ethnographic research methods.

Personal skills

The candidate should be able to work independently and structured, while at the same time engage in close collaborations with members of the research group and research participants.
