About the position

We have a vacancy for a PhD Candidate PhD position in modelling, simulation and visualization of microbial pathogens transport and deposition in a drinking water source at Department of Oceans Operations and Civil Engineering.

In Norway, intense and prolonged precipitation associated with a changing climate, is expected to result in the deterioration of water quality in freshwater and marine systems. This will have significant impacts on drinking water facilities that depend on surface water sources, and marine-based aquaculture industries. For purposes of planning and risk-management, there is an increasing use of models to predict contaminants transport and deposition in drinking water sources and marine water systems. Among the variety of models, properly built real-time hydrodynamic and water quality models can provide reliable means of tracking primary sources of contaminants in water systems. However, existing hydrodynamic and water quality models remain largely embryonic in their ability to model and predict the transport and deposition of micro and nano-particles, especially microbial pathogens. Among other limitations, the models assume first-order decay processes, and the effects of sediment deposition and resuspension as well as other environmental factors in water column and their effects on the transport and/or persistence of microbial pathogens are not well accounted for. The models are also scenario-based, and often applied in the planning phase of facilities or used to assess the impacts of hazardous events. There is currently no platform that integrates water quality data with real-time hydrodynamic modelling, simulation and visualization of microbial transport and deposition in water systems.

• The PhD position will contribute to a larger project that aims to develop a cloud-based platform for the real-time modelling, simulation and visualization of water quality in freshwater and marine ecosystems.
• Specifically, the PhD position will focus on assessing and incorporating advanced microbial pathogens transport and deposition models into existing-hydrodynamic water quality for a drinking water source.

• Apply and validate the revised hydrodynamic-water quality model through laboratory experiments as well as real-time data from a network of sensors installed in the catchment and body of a selected drinking water source.

• Develop a platform for real-time modelling, simulation and visualization of microbial transport and deposition in the selected drinking water source.

Qualification requirements

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master's degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Water and Environmental Engineering, Applied Hydrology, Water Resource Engineering or Applied Mathematics/Physics with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Other qualifications

• Good programming skills
• Good theoretical and analytical skills;
• Have knowledge in hydrodynamic-water quality models related to freshwater systems
• Have knowledge of advanced mathematical models pertaining to particle transport and deposition, especially the experience of using CFD as well as other hydrodynamic-water quality softwares for specific problems;
• Experience with lab-related set-ups on water quality modelling;
• Good written and oral English language skills, documented by either TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English

Salary and conditions

PhD candidate:
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is x years (with or without required duties?). Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Engineering.

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
