About the position

NTNUs Department of Information Security and Communications Technology (www.ntnu.no/iik) invites applications for a PhD position in Biometrics. The position is based at campus Gjøvik and is also affiliated with NTNUs Center for Cyber and Information Security (CCIS, www.ccis.no).

The position reports to the head of the Department.

Job abstractJV_description

Face recognition systems are widely deployed in numerous applications including border control scenarios. However, the morphed face image attack in which the facial representation of two individuals is combined to have a single image can be utilized to exploit the passport issuance protocol. It is demonstrated in earlier works that; the morphed images can deceive both humans and machines and thus causing a vulnerability of the passport application procedure as well as the border control applications.

The PhD candidate will work on the following main tasks:

• Development of different algorithms based on new feature extraction techniques for face Morphing Attack Detection (MAD).
• Development of advance machine learning approaches for face Morphing Attack Detection (MAD).

Qualification requirements

PhD candidate:

We seek highly motivated and excellent candidates with a MSc or education at the equivalent level who has

• Knowledge of pattern recognition, biometrics, databases, computer networks, and protocols.
• Excellent programming skills in C++, Java, iOS and Matlab.
• Excellent communication skills - written and oral
• Ability to work independently, as well as in team

Furthermore, experience in smartphone phone programming is advantageous.

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master's degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in [subject area] or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Other qualifications

Excellent written and oral communication skills. Applicants who neither are native English speakers nor from Scandinavia, must provide evidence of English language proficiency by means of one of the following tests: TOEFL, Academic IELTS and Cambridge CAE or CPE. Minimum scores need to be:

• TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
• IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
• CAE/CPE: grade B or A.

Salary and conditions

PhD candidate:
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 per year. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Information Security. As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
