About the position

We have vacancies for four (4) PhD candidates related to Hydrogen Embrittlement at Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. Note that each position is announced separately with different application numbers.

The PhD positions are part of two projects financed by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and industrial partners:

Safe Pipelines for Hydrogen Transport (HyLINE)

HyLINE will address pipeline material challenges related to transporting clean hydrogen gas in the existing pipeline infrastructure for natural gas transport and new pipeline infrastructure.

Multiscale Hydrogen Embrittlement Assessment for Subsea Conditions (M-HEAT)

The primary objective for M-HEAT is to establish a hydrogen informed framework for accurate and cost-effective engineering assessment of industry relevant materials exposed to hydrogen in subsea conditions.

The PhD candidates will work in a research group consisting of Professor Afrooz Barnoush, Professor Roy Johnsen, Adjunct Professor Mariano Iannuzzu (Curtin University, Australia) and Adjunct Professor Ole Øystein Knudsen (SINTEF). In 2018 a total of 12 PhD candidates were working with hydrogen embrittlement projects connected in this group. The group has also close connections and research cooperation with international research groups around the world.

Job abstractJV_description

When metallic materials are exposed to hydrogen environment, hydrogen can be absorbed and diffuse into the metals, interact with microstructure and deformation, and cause material degradation (i.e. hydrogen embrittlement) that may lead to premature failure with catastrophic consequences. Hydrogen embrittlement is a long-standing challenge for both the traditional energy industry as well as the renewable energy sector. It is a critical failure mode that must be considered in securing the material integrity and developing the life extension strategy of structural components. Hydrogen can come from different sources: For the actual projects, absorbed hydrogen from H2-gass (HyLINE) and from cathodic polarization (HyLINE and M-HEAT) are the two important sources.

M-HEAT project

PhD Position 4: Small scale mechanical testing and high resolution characterization of the hydrogen effect on corrosion resistant alloys.

This Ph.D. position will focus on advanced materials characterization and multi scale mechanical testing to understand the influence of hydrogen on the local material structure and mechanical properties. This PhD candidate will work in close cooperation with Ghent University, Belgium.

Qualification requirements

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master's degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in:

. Material science, material physics or material engineering with knowledge and experience in nanomechanical testing and experience in advanced characterization methods

or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Engineering: https://www.ntnu.edu/iv/phd-information

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months after commencement of the PhD position.

Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
