About the position

We have vacant professorships/associate professorships in Food Technology and in Industrial Nutrition at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science.

The Department has a national role and responsibility for research and teaching in biotechnology and food science and a wide range of expertise. We have a special responsibility of teaching in the disciplines of biochemistry and microbiology. The scientific activity is organized in the four main areas of Biopolymers and Biomaterials, Food Science, Microbial Biotechnology, and Analysis and Control of Microbial Systems.

The department focus on developing integrated research groups where researchers and lecturers within related fields can establish strong research and teaching units. The Department of Biotechnology and Food Science is the host for the national center for biotechnology training, research and innovation: Center for Digital Life Norway.

The positions reports to Head of the Department.

Work abstractJV_description

The position in Food Technology will have specific responsibility for teaching and research in the field of food science and technology with a specific focus on fruits, vegetables, cereals and processes where those raw materials are included.

The position in Industrial Nutrition will have specific responsibility for teaching and research in the field of Industrial Nutrition applied to health effects of marine lipids, proteins and other bioactive compounds in food raw materials. The preferred candidate can document expertise in studying how quality and bioavailability of nutritional and bioactive compounds change during processing and throughout the food value chain. Fields of high interest include health effect of lipids and proteins, and changes in nutrients during processing.

Qualification requirements

The successful candidates will have a PhD in a relevant field, a proven track record over the last five years of research that will complement and augment research programs in food science at the Department. It is expected that the candidates will initiate research programs and integrate the scientific activity in the Food Science research group. Candidates for the full Professorship should have demonstrated skills in leadership, international scientific collaborations, and the ability to attract external funding, preferably from the Norwegian and/or European research funding systems.

The applicant's research must be documented and of high international quality, showing both breadth and depth. Production must reflect an independent research profile and show the ability to take up new research issues. Continuous research activity is a prerequisite for the granting of professorial competence. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized international journals within his or her subject area. The greatest emphasis is placed on academic work during the past five years. 

Strong emphasis will also be put on teaching and communication skills. It is expected that the candidate will participate in teaching and developing high quality of education. Evaluation of the applicants will be based on documented materials, including pedagogical training, presentation of academic work, previous experience from supervision and teaching of bachelor-, master-level  and PhD candidates, as well as other related skills.  Applicants with teaching experience at university level will be preferred. Both quality and scope will be evaluated.

Basic qualifications in the discipline of education are required. Anyone who is appointed without having formal basic qualifications in the discipline of education (formerly referred to as practical qualifications in teaching at university level) and who is unable to document equivalent qualifications is required to complete an approved course within two years of appointment. Uniped at NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

The person appointed must comply with the decisions about changes due to developments in the subject area, and the organizational changes that may result from decisions regarding the university's activities.

Good communication skills in English, both written and oral, is required.

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course in Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Salary and conditions

The position as Professor/Associate Professor comes with a starting package for new research staff and opportunities for mentoring. The gross salary for the position of professor code 1013 / associate professor code 1011 is remunerated pending on qualifications and seniority and according to Norwegian State Salary Scale. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. Members of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund are offered a generous pension for life and access to favourable housing loan and insurance schemes.

Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. 

The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at and available to the institution.
