About K.G. Jebsen TREC
K.G. Jebsen TREC is a research centre in translational medicine funded by the Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Foundation, UiT - the Arctic university of Norway, and the North Norwegian Health Authorities. Professor John-Bjarne Hansen is the head of K.G. Jebsen TREC. The Centre has 5.2 permanent scientific positions (professors), 2 technical positions, and 15-20 temporary scientific positions (PhD-students and postdoctors). In addition, K.G. Jebsen TREC has partners in Tromsø, Bodø, Oslo, Stockholm, Leiden (The Netherlands), and San Diego (USA).

 

The overall aim of K.G. Jebsen TREC is to identify novel inherited and environmental risk factors and extend the understanding of the pathogenesis in venous thromboembolism (VTE). TREC is organized into three research groups; TREC-Clinic, TREC-Lab and TREC-Epidemiology. This position will be allocated to the TREC-Lab group. The appointed Researcher must have her/his daily workplace at UiT, campus Tromsø.

 

About the project
Endothelial cells (EC) line the inside of all blood vessels and have an important role in inflammation, maintenance of vascular tone, haemostasis and thrombosis development. We recently defined the body-wide EC-enriched transcriptome (Butler et. al. Cell Systems, 2016 3:287-301), using a new method to analysis RNAseq data from over 100 samples from different organs. It is well known that EC in different vascular beds have different properties, due to specialised tissue type-specific functions. Here, we will expand our knowledge of these differences to generate a 'roadmap' of EC-enriched proteins throughout the human body, by using our analysis method to define EC-enriched profiles in individual organs. We will select previously unstudied candidates for lab-based experimental analysis, using various criteria, which may include links to disease, such as VTE, or other indications of potential critical function. We will investigate the properties and cellular function of candidates. Techniques will include genetic manipulations (knockdown and over expression) in in vitro 'model vessel' systems, and in vivo murine models to study how the genes influence key EC functions, such as angiogenesis, inflammation and haemostatic processes.

 

Qualification requirements
For appointment as a Researcher, the applicant requires a Norwegian doctoral degree in cell biology, molecular biology or biochemistry or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree.

 

Essential requirements:
Research experience in the vascular biology/endothelial cell field, with expertise in:

• Cell culture
• Standard laboratory techniques such as ELISA, Western blotting, immunocytochemistry, qPCR, flow cytometry

Desirable experience:

• Blood coagulation assays
• Plasmid production and expression and purification of recombinant proteins
• Biochemistry techniques e.g. enzymatic activity, kinetic constants, gel-filtration chromatography
• Primary cell isolation and culture from human and/or murine tissue
• Image analysis (confocal and phase contrast)
• Experience of analytical/statistical tools such as R, SPSS or Matlab

The level of experience and relevance will be given weight.

 

The candidate will be involved in supervision of PhD students on similar projects and, in addition, is expected to develop a project proposal with a progress plan. It is required that the applicant will be able to complete the project during the period of appointment.

 

The candidate must speak and write English fluently.

 

The candidate must be able to work systematically, independently and have the ability to work in an interdisciplinary research team. Emphasis will also be placed on communicative and collaborative skills, as well as personal suitability.

 

Working conditions
The working hours shall be utilised for research, research-related activities and research administration.

 

The successful applicant must be willing to engage himself/herself in the ongoing development of his/her discipline and the university as a whole.

 

The remuneration for this position is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1109.

 

A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

Assessment
The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the application documents and the text of the announcement.

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview shall, among other things, aim to clarify the applicant's personal suitability for the position and motivations. A trial lecture may also be held.
