About the position

We have a vacancy for a Professor in Energy and Process Engineering within the thermal energy and fluid dynamics research group. We are looking for an inspiring, ambitious and proactive person who will take an active role in departmental duties, research and teaching. The candidate shall be responsible for developing internationally recognised fundamental and applied research activities within the general areas of thermal energy and fluid dynamics.

 

Preference will be given to applicants with international experience and a documented track record of fundamental and applied research in areas relevant to carbon capture technologies for carbon capture and storage (CCS), especially pre-combustion capture technologies. It is further expected that the Professor will take a leading role in internationalisation related to the European research infrastructures on CCS, ECCSEL, which has a close contact to EPT. In addition, the Professor will take a leading role in research-based education which includes course development for bachelors, masters and PhD students within EPT. 

The position reports to The Head of Department of Energy and Process Engineering.
 

Qualification requirements

The position of Professor requires university education in engineering, natural science or chemical engineering. In addition, academic competence at least at doctoral level is required in the relevant subject area.

The applicant's research must be documented and of high international quality, showing both breadth and depth. Production must reflect an independent research profile and show the ability to take up new research issues. Continuous research activity is a prerequisite for the granting of professorial competence. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized international journals within his or her subject area. The greatest emphasis is placed on academic work during the past five years. 

Emphasis will be placed on ability and experience in initiating and leading research and development work, and in obtaining external funding for research. Emphasis will also be placed on a documented commitment to teaching, development of teaching materials, and supervision of students at all levels. 

Research profile
The candidate should have international experience and an excellent track record of fundamental and applied experimental research in areas of thermal-fluid sciences, with relevance to carbon capture technologies for CCS.  This should be demonstrated by a suitable publication rate in high impact journals as well as the ability to independently establish research activity attracting research funding through national and international funding instruments. Emphasis is placed on productivity during the past five years. Candidates with industrial experience must be able to demonstrate research independence, technical excellence and excellent knowledge of the fundamental sciences and engineering. 

Teaching profile
The Professor will be expected to teach courses in the area of thermodynamics and thermal energy as well as the supervision of Masters and PhD students. Emphasis will also be placed on a documented commitment to teaching, development of teaching materials, and supervision experience.

Alternatively, the position is advertised as a qualification fellowship for a period of 3 years; see Section 6-5 (1) of the Act relating to Universities and University Colleges. 

Other requirements 

Basic qualifications in the discipline of education are required. Anyone who is appointed without having formal basic qualifications in the discipline of education (formerly referred to as practical qualifications in teaching at university level) and who is unable to document equivalent qualifications is required to complete an approved course within two years of appointment. Uniped at NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

Pedagogical skills and qualifications will be emphasized. The evaluation will be based on documented material related to teaching, forms of presentation for the academic works, experience in teaching, supervision of doctoral and master's degree subjects as well as other types of pedagogical background. Applicants with teaching experience at university level will be preferred. Quality and breadth will be evaluated.   

Employees who do not have formal qualifications in teaching at university level and who cannot provide documentation of equivalent qualifications must complete an approved pedagogical development programme within two years of appointment. 

The person appointed must comply with the decisions about changes due to developments in the subject area, and the organizational changes that may result from decisions regarding the university's activities. 

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course in Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

. The evaluation will take into account the candidates ability to inspire and engage people in excellent laboratory based research teams with a strong commitment to excellence.
. Preference will be given to candidates with hands-on experience, the ability to guide student projects and with potential to develop externally funded national and international projects.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Professor code 1013 is normally from NOK 619 300 to NOK 950 400 before tax per year,?depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. 

The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at and available to the institution.
