About the position

We have a vacancy for a 100% position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow on the project "CURIE - Cancer imaging by functional magnetic resonance for
Radiotherapy Individualization and Evaluation" funded by the Norwegian Cancer Society, where we aim to develop a novel diagnostic and therapeutic framework for non-invasive personalized cancer medicine. The position is affiliated with an expanding research group in medical imaging and radiotherapy at the Department of Physics, NTNU and in close collaboration with St. Olavs hospital. The appointment has a duration of 3 years, but with possibility for up to one-year extension with teaching.

The position is organized in the Department of Physics. Our research spans a broad spectrum of natural sciences and technology. The Department is currently expanding and has activity in astroparticle physics, solid state physics, material physics, soft and complex matter physics, biopolymer physics, medical physics, statistical physics, optics, atmospheric physics and university didactics. The Department recruits the best physics students in Norway and also offers a large number of courses in physics for other study programmes at NTNU. Research staff at the Department makes a special effort to increase the awareness and understanding of the importance and impact of physics in our society. Job abstractJV_description

• The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will work in the multidisciplinary field of medical imaging and radiotherapy of cancer, where the Fellow will join a research group working with quantitative and functional imaging (magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET)), both to provide predictive/prognostic biomarkers of radiotherapy outcome to be used in personalised cancer treatment, but also to use such image information in further developments within image-guided adaptive radiotherapy.
• The Fellow will in particular work within the expanding field of MRI in radiotherapy, with main tasks involving advanced, quantitative analysis of functional MRI in rectal cancer and head & neck cancer. In addition, competence and experience within machine learning algorithms, statistical prediction modelling and/or radiobiological modelling (of tumor control probability / normal tissue complication probability) will be positively weighted in the evaluation.
• The Postdoctoral Fellow will become an important member in an expanding research group in the multidisciplinary field of medical imaging and radiotherapy in cancer treatment, and the candidate's personal and communicative skills will therefore be emphasized. The workplace is at Department of Physics, NTNU, but will involve collaboration with St. Olavs Hospital as well as with established national and international partners.
• The candidate will work in an active multidisciplinary research environment with high scientific standards. We are offering training, continuous supervision and opportunities for participation at national and international courses and congresses. Postdoctoral Fellows at our Department will also receive support for developing a personal career plan, including for instance relevant courses and training in grant writing. Fellows will also be given an opportunity to extend their employment with up to 1 year based on teaching bachelor and/or master courses at our Department.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral fellow:

The required qualifications are:

• A university degree (Master of Science or equivalent) and PhD in physics, primarily with specialization in medical physics, radiation physics or biophysics. In addition, candidates with degrees in machine learning, bioinformatics or equivalent will be considered. Candidates expecting to complete their PhD before August 1, 2019 may also apply.
• Excellent personal and communicative skills; the project will require ability to both work independently and to interact with other PhD candidates, students, experienced scientists, medical physicists as well as medical doctors from different specialties (e.g., oncologists, surgeons, radiologists)
• Fluent English language, both written and spoken
• Strong motivation, scientific creativity and enthusiasm for research, high working and implementation capacity

Personal characteristics

In addition, one or several of the following qualifications / skills are desired and will be weighted in the evaluation process:

• Relevant clinical or research experience with MRI-based radiotherapy and/or quantitative MRI
• Experience with translational work towards biology, oncology and radiotherapy
• Fluent Scandinavian language (due to interaction with students and various personnel at the hospital) Strong skills in programming, medical image analysis and/or image-guided radiotherapy simulations in Matlab or similar software
• Strong skills in machine learning algorithms / informatics / prediction modelling
• Strong skills in radiobiological modelling (of tumor control probability / normal tissue complication probability)

Salary and conditions

Postdoc:
Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 515 200 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years, with a possibility for up to 1-year extension. It is expected that the Fellow can start in the position within September 2019.
