About the position

PhD position available at the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience, Faculty for Medicine and Health Sciences, NTNU from October 1, 2019. The work carried out in this project is financed by the MH faculty as part of a Norway-Japan exchange grant ` Japan And Norway United in Brain Education and Therapeutics (JANUBET)` funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The successful candidate will be offered a three-year position. The work place will be Trondheim but will include visits to Japan.

The Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at NTNU. It was established as a Centre of Excellence in 2002, and designated as a Kavli Foundation Institute in 2007 (www.kavlifoundation.org). The scientific goal of the Institute is to increase the understanding of neural circuits and systems along with their role in generating psychological functions. Description of the project and the job

The project will involve further research into a recently developed new method to identify, observe and manipulate the activity of neurons in situ. The method, dubbed "Enhancer-Dependent Gene Expression" (EDGE) has led to the development of viral vectors with a high degree of specificity for particular neuronal cell types. The collaborative project, together with researchers in Japan, at Kyoto University and Tohoku University in Sendai, aims to make use of this approach to develop viral tools specific to cell types thought to be involved in brain disorders to model and eventually treat them. In Trondheim we aim to do the basic research on this new technology, whereas an eventual transfer to clinical applications will depend on experimental work performed by our colleagues in Japan.

The PhD student in Neuroscience will work in the group of Professor Cliff Kentros with co-supervision of Professor Menno Witter. The role of the student will be to provide a liason between the Norwegian and Japanese efforts, concentrating upon biochemical and bioinformatic characterization of cis-regulatory elements in micro-dissected brain tissue. Once putative region-specific cis-regulatory sequences are identified, they will be cloned into viral vectors and injected into rodent brain for anatomical characterization. In collaboration with colleagues in Norway and Japan, the student may also participate in behavioral and electrophysiological experiments in rodents using these unique tools.

Qualification requirements

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master's degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in the relevant subject area or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Candidates who expect to complete their master's degree studies by summer 2019 are encouraged to apply.

• For the PhD position in the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience / Centre for Neural Computation, the applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent education within the field of Neuroscience.
• You will work in an international environment where English is the common language for oral and written communication. Fluency in English is therefore required.

Emphasis will also be placed on:

• Knowledge of fundamental brain anatomy, systems neuroscience, bioinformatics (including familiarity with online genomic tools and competence in simple coding, e.g. Matlab, Python) and molecular genetic techniques are important additional specific selection criteria.

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 - 523 000 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years, full time. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. In the case of Neuroscience that includes compulsory educational activities as organized by NTNU and the Norwegian Research school of Neuroscience NRSN, of which you must become a member; please see https://www.ntnu.edu/nrsn.Since the project is funded by an educational grant aiming to stimulate internationalization, you will take part of your training through specialized courses organized as part of JANUBET.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology.
